The Kids!!

The Gambia - the smallest country in Africa - is located in West Africa. It was a British colony, so some people - especially if they've been to school - do speak English. The kids speak "Fula" which is the language of their tribe - and have now learned English sicne they've been in school!

The kids all live together in a compound with the Cham family. None of them have ever been to school before. When we started, they each have only had one set of clothes and no shoes.

Ousman - their older "brother" - made it his mission to get them all enrolled in school and get them each a uniform, a notebook, and a pair of shoes. Ousman didn't start school until he was much older (around fourteen) and he really wanted to make sure his brothers and sisters - and the almudos who live with his family - don't have to go through the experience of being so much older than the other kids in their classes.
